CS201 Lab: Simple ALU Multiplier Circuit
Objective of this lab:
To investigate the implementation of integer multiplication in hardware.
Preparation
Read lab lecture notes.
Lab Assignment
Please note:To make it easier for marking, you are required to submit
one .pdf file and one .circ file, they will contain all the required components for the lab assignment.
This will apply to Lab #1 to Lab #6.
- The diagram below shows an unsigned integer multiplier.
- Build the circuit in Logisim using:
- 4 bit data paths
- 4 bit input device for setting the initial values of the Multiplicand M and Multiplier register Q
- one bit input device for controlling the shifting and the loading of the A register
- one bit input device for controlling the shifting and loading of the Q register
- one bit input device to control the loading and clearing of the C register (the C register can be a D flip-flop)
- output devices are used to show the results
- show the contents of C*E (i.e. 1100*1110, Multiplicand is 1100, and Multiplier is 1110.) at each stage of the multiplication.
Hand in the following:
1. Make a table to show the result and operation at each stage of the multiplication C*E (i.e. 1100*1110).
2. Screenshot your circuit at each stage when you run for the multiplication C*E (i.e. 1100*1110), 8 pictures in total.
3. Describe the rules for the use of the carry bit in your multiplier circuit.
